Chiteve Primary School
Chiteve shows how a badly neglected place of learning can become, step by step, a safe, clean and future-proof place for children and for the whole village community.

Chiteve is a village in the north-west of Zambia, in the North-Western Province. It belongs to the Manyinga District. Around 1,300 to 1,400 people live here. About half of them are under 15 years old.
The village and the surrounding areas are rural, and the infrastructure is often rudimentary, which makes challenges such as clean drinking water and access to education harder to solve.
We first visited Chiteve in 2022. Back then we found crumbling school buildings and far too few toilets. Lessons took place either under a tree or in makeshift huts. Since then we have had the school building renovated and started a number of other measures.
"Keep Chiteve clean!" is the motto the community and the school live and act by.
The parent-teacher committee is highly committed, so all the measures could be carried out quickly and without any major setbacks. We are very proud of this wonderful school.

What is coming up
What comes next in 2026
In 2026 we want to strengthen the school self-sufficiency and at the same time give the children practical knowledge about nutrition, growing food and responsibility. So that the garden does not compete with the village water supply, a well with its own water tank has to be built as well.
The total cost is around 10,000 euros. We have already raised 6,300 euros, so 3,700 euros are still missing to make the project happen.
School garden
Beds for maize, vegetables and bananas. The harvest goes straight into the school kitchen.
Well
The garden gets its own water supply.
Fence
Protection from wild animals and grazing livestock — essential if the garden is to work in the long run.
